The “Holland & Associates Environmental Consultants” trading name was established in 2005 when Ross Holland envisioned an Environmental Consultancy that could operate with flexibility and efficiency, offering a wide spectrum of class leading environmental consulting services.  Holland & Associates is a professional environmental consultancy which operates on the core principals of Integrity, Sustainable Outcomes, and Service Excellence.

Holland and Associates offers a comprehensive suite of environmental consulting services. We provide Environmental Management Services in accordance with the principals of Integrated Environmental Management and global best practice.  Within South Africa, we conduct environmental assessments in conformity with the requirements of the Regulations published in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) (Act 107 of 1998, as amended) and in terms of the relevant domestic environmental legislation, and/or finance institution requirements when working in other jurisdictions.   Our services also include undertaking Environmental Opportunities and Constraints Analysis, Environmental Due Diligence Investigations, compilation of Environmental Management Plans and Programmes (EMP`s), as well as environmental monitoring (Environmental Control Officer work) and auditing.  We also undertake independent Environmental Process Reviews, Environmental Risk Assessments, and Environmental Education.

In order to cater for the specific capacity and diverse capability demands of large scale projects, Holland & Associates have formed a number of strategic associations with other high caliber environmental professionals, who partner with Holland & Associates on a project to project basis, when required.  Holland & Associates Environmental Consultants are based in Cape Town South Africa, and are available to undertake work throughout the Republic, as well as beyond the borders of South Africa.

Ross HollandRoss Holland is the founder of Holland & Associates Environmental Consultants. Ross has an MSc in Environmental Science from the University of Cape Town (2000), and over 13 years experience working as an Environmental Practitioner.  Ross is a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA), and is a Green Star-SA Accredited Professional. He also has an interest in water resource management and holds certificates of competence in both Water Quality and Fresh Water Ecology with distinction.

Ross has extensive experience in managing Environmental Impact Assessment processes including housing, resort, and commercial developments, water infrastructure projects including dam schemes and pipelines, renewable energy projects, the expansion of educational facilities, timber treatment plants, new roads and road upgrades, municipal waste sites, and a shooting range.  Ross has also undertaken the independent review of a number of Basic Assessment, Scoping and Environmental Impact Reports as well as NEMA S24G applications.

Ross has also been involved in a wide spectrum of other environmental work including the undertaking of capacity building within the National Department of Environmental Affairs’ Marine and Coastal Management Directorate, the undertaking of environmental opportunity and constraints analysis, as well as lecturing, environmental auditing, drafting of Environmental Management Plans/ Programs and Environmental Control Officer (ECO) work.

In addition, Ross has been involved in the collection of water quality and aquatic macro-invertebrate data for a number of fresh water ecological studies.

Nicole Holland joined Holland & Associates in 2011, after having worked in the environmental department of a large civil engineering firm for the past seven years. Nicole Holland has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Environmental and Geographical Science from the University of Cape Town, specializing in Environmental Management.  She has 14 years of experience in the environmental management field and has compiled and managed numerous environmental investigations including Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Management Plans/Programmes (EMP), waste management license application processes, as well as applications for amendments of environmental authorizations.

Nicole has played a leading role in the development of a number of important strategic environmental planning policies including the development of an Integrated Environmental Programme for the West Coast District; the compilation of a water resource protection sub-strategy for the Olifants Doring Catchment Management Plan; as well as the development of an information document on environmental legislation and its associated implications, for the Drakenstein Municipalities’ Civil Engineering Services Department.

Nicole has extensive experience in managing environmental impact assessments including, amongst others, wastewater treatment works, wind energy facilities, water supply dams, housing and resort developments, cemeteries, road upgrades, pipelines, waste sites, and a cement manufacturing plant.  Nicole has also undertaken the independent review of a number of Scoping and Environmental Impact Reports and has been involved in a broad spectrum of other environmental work including Environmental Auditing, the drafting of Environmental Management Programs, and Environmental Control Officer Work.

Nicole is a registered Professional Natural Scientist (Environmental Scientist) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions, and is an active member of the South African affiliate of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIAsa).  Nicole is also a founder member of the Environmental Assessment Practitioners of South Africa (EAPASA)

Professional Associates 

 MWebber_photoMelanie Webber holds a MSc in Ecological Assessment from Stellenbosch University and has 12 years’ experience working in the Environmental field of which nearly 7 years were spent working for the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP). Melanie’s extensive experience in the review of Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, appeals, NEMA S24G applications, LUPO reports, mining reports and agricultural applications submitted under CARA, makes her an invaluable member of the Holland & Associates team.

Melanie also has a detailed working knowledge of the administration of relevant environmental regulations (e.g. ECA, NEMA), policies, guidelines, and norms and standards.  Melanie has experience in  a diverse range of development projects including inter alia, resorts, residential developments, renewable energy projects, nuclear energy projects, sports facilities, dams, agricultural infrastructure and telecommunication projects. She also has experience of the NEMA Waste Management Licence regulatory process. Ms Webber is a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment of South Africa (IAIAsa).

Adri Meyer holds an MPhil in Marine and Environmental Law from the University of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) in Conservation Ecology from the University of Stellenbosch.

Adri`s academic background has equipped her with valuable knowledge on international conventions as well as domestic legislation relating to environmental and maritime law, as well as the ability to critically analyse legal frameworks and apply these to environmental issues.  Adri previously worked for BirdLife South Africa’s Seabird Conservation Programme, where she was responsible for managing and conducting fieldwork, permit applications and reporting, commenting on Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, dealing with issues pertaining to marine mining, as well as being the main liaison for the Safeguard our Seabed Coalition.

She has a keen interest in sustainable development, natural resource management, nature conservation and renewable energies.
