Proposed Upgrade and Relocation of the CCA and TBTN Treatment Plants at Somerset Timbers

PROPOSED UPGRADE AND RELOCATION OF THE CCA AND TBTN TREATMENT PLANTS AT SOMERSET TIMBERS, ERF 34628, STRAND, WESTERN CAPE: NOTIFICATION OF OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT ON THE AD-HOC DEVELOPMENT SETBACK LINE APPLICATION

(DEA&DP Ref No: 16/3/1/6/2/A3/57/2047/14)

Somerset Timbers (which is owned and operated by The Keith Wetmore Family Trust) operates two timber treatment plants at their premises on Erf 34628, in The Strand, Western Cape, treating with CCA and TBTN. Somerset Timbers propose to upgrade and move (re-construct) both plants to a newly constructed building on their premises, approximately 45m west of the existing treatment plants. Erf 34628 is located in an urban, industrial area, on land zoned for Industrial use.
The proposed project triggers a listed activity in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) (No. 107 of 1998)(as amended) Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations (2010), i.e. Activity 10 of GN No. 546, and hence requires Environmental Authorisation from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP),  unless a setback line is adopted/ determined by DEA&DP. Holland & Associates Environmental Consultants has been appointed to undertake the requisite setback line application, and a “Checklist for the request for the adoption/ definition of an ad hoc setback line” for the proposed project in terms of NEMA has been submitted to DEA&DP in this regard.

The “Checklist for the request for the adoption/ definition of an ad hoc setback line” has been made available to the public for a 21 day comment period, and is downloadable via the links below. Should you have any comments, issues or concerns regarding the proposed project and setback line, please provide your comments in writing via post, e-mail or fax to Ms Nicole Holland of Holland & Associates Environmental Consultants (Fax: 086 762 6126, email: nicole@hollandandassociates.net or post: PO Box 31108, Tokai, 7966) on or before 16 May 2014.
